Grandville Mayor James R. Buck Receives 2012 Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award
MACKINAC ISLAND, Michigan (Oct. 4, 2012)—-The Michigan Municipal League announced today that it is honoring Grandville Mayor James R. Buck as the League’s 2012 winner of the Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award. The award was formally presented to Buck during the League’s Annual Convention Oct. 4 on Mackinac Island.
Buck has served as mayor of Grandville for the past 28 years, following 13 years of service as a councilmember. He is the longest serving mayor in the city’s history. During that time, he has played an active role within the Michigan Municipal League. Buck was elected to the League Board of Trustees in 1991 and served as League Vice President from 1993-1994. In 1995, Buck began serving on the MML Foundation Board and currently serves as the chairman, guiding the charitable organization’s mission to raise funds for the League’s educational programs that enhance and develop leadership in local government.
Over the years, Buck’s commitment and dedication to the League has also included the League’s Workers’ Compensation Board (1985-1991) and Region Five Chair (1990-1991). He has served on numerous League committees including the Legislative and Urban Affairs Committee (1982), Let Local Votes Count Steering Committee, the National League of Cities Policy Committee and Youth Committee (1991), the Land Use Committee (2007), and the Transportation Infrastructure Committee (2008). He received the League’s Special Award of Merit in 1990 and became a League Honorary Life Member in 1998. Buck is also active in the Michigan Association of Mayors, and served on its board of directors from 1990-1994.
“We are proud to recognize Mayor James R. Buck for nearly three decades of service to his own community and to communities across the state through his many leadership roles with the League,” said Michigan Municipal League Executive Director and CEO Dan Gilmartin. “Mayor Buck truly exemplifies the spirit of the Jim Sinclair Award.”
The Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award, first awarded in 2008, is a peer-nomination in honor and memory of Rogers City Councilmember Jim Sinclair, a tireless promoter of local government and fervent believer in education and training for elected officials. It is a tribute to Sinclair's legacy of personal dedication, passion and commitment to the League and its mission.
