Sault Sainte Marie City Manager Spencer Nebel Honored with Special Award of Merit at 2012 League Convention

MACKINAC ISLAND, Michigan (Oct. 4, 2012)—- The Michigan Municipal League honored Sault Sainte Marie City Manager Spencer Nebel with a 2012 Special Award of Merit during the League’s Annual Convention on October 4 at Mackinac Island.

nebel Nebel recently celebrated his 20th anniversary as Sault Sainte Marie’s city manager. As an Upper Peninsula native dedicated to the needs and future of the state’s northernmost region, Nebel also served the cities of Munising and Marquette earlier in his career. He is a member and past president of the Michigan Local Government Managers Association (MLGMA), served on the MLGMA Summer Workshop planning and nominating committees and as the U.P. Local Government Managers Chair. He is also on the Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council.

Over the years, Nebel’s service with the Michigan Municipal League has included the League’s Board of Trustees, the Legislative Governance and Transportation and Environmental Affairs Policy committees, and as a Region Seven officer representing the entire Upper Peninsula.

“Spencer Nebel is a gracious and humble man whose thought-provoking questions, quick wit, and ready laugh are as valued as his dedication and hard work,” said League Executive Director and CEO Dan Gilmartin. “We always look forward to seeing Mr. Nebel and the entire Sault Ste. Marie contingent at League events.”

Gilmartin praised Nebel for his leadership role in helping to guide placemaking efforts in Sault Ste. Marie, including the renovation of a new city hall from an historic federal building, supporting a mixed-use historic site infill development known as Park Place City Center, and a current collaborative “town-gown” initiative with Lake Superior State University and other stakeholders.

“Mr. Nebel and the city are well focused on placemaking efforts, and are working hard to bring stakeholders together to transform a ‘city with a university’ into a university town,” said Gilmartin. “We are proud to acknowledge his efforts with a Special Award of Merit.”
