League Urges Members to Promote Downtown Businesses
What is the "ShopMIDowntown Holiday Challenge"?
It is a campaign challenging Michigan's residents to spend 75% of their holiday shopping dollars in Michigan's downtowns and Michigan Main Street districts. We have created a Facebook page for the campaign where we are asking people to post pictures and video of their favorite downtown stores. People who post pictures or video will be automatically entered into a random drawing to win an overnight stay at one of the following establishments:
The Ramsdell Inn in downtown Manistee
The Doherty Hotel in downtown Clare
The National House Inn in downtown Marshall
The Water Street Inn in downtown Boyne City
The Courtland Carriage House Bed & Breakfast in downtown Hart.
Manistee, Clare, Marshall, Boyne City and Hart are recognized Michigan Main Street© districts.
When is the “ShopMIDowntown Holiday Challenge”?
The campaign will run from November 8 through December 31, 2010.
Who is involved?
A number of statewide partners are presenting the challenge including the Michigan Main Street Center @ Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), the Small Business Association of Michigan (SBAM), the Michigan Downtown Association (MDA), the Michigan Municipal League (MML), the Community Economic Developer’s Association of Michigan (CEDAM), The National Trust’s Main Street Center, Main Street Oakland County, Local First and Buy Michigan Now!
Who can participate?
Shoppers are invited to make purchases in locally-owned businesses in any community with a traditional downtown or an officially designated Michigan Main StreetSM district. For a complete list of Michigan Main StreetSM districts, click here.
How can my community use this?
- Help spread the word and ask the residents of your community to take the Challenge and shop their downtown this holiday season
- Remind customers and residents to post pictures or video to the Facebook page
- Create your own "Holiday Challenge" or "Shop Local" campaign
- Issue your own press release putting your own local spin on the challenge

Why was the “ShopMIDowntown Holiday Challenge” created?
The past few years have been tough on local retailers. The state’s, and nation’s, economic health has not been what was in years past. The partners wanted to organize a statewide campaign to help raise awareness that Michigan residents' purchases, particularly during the holiday season, can have a dramatic effect on the economic health of their local economy. In short, supporting locally owned small businesses creates jobs.
The “ShopMIDowntown Holiday Challenge” was inspired by a campaign in Sparta, Michigan. Sparta’s “Christmas in Sparta” campaign features a video blog highlighting the various purchases being made downtown.
Michigan Municipal League advocates on behalf of its member communities in Lansing, Washington D.C., and the courts; provides educational opportunities for elected and appointed municipal officials; and assists municipal leaders in administering services to their communities through League programs and services.
