Honorable Brenda Lawrence To Speak At Michigan Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials Annual Fundraising Dinner
Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence will be the guest speaker at the annual fundraising dinner for the Michigan Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials on October 9 in Kalamazoo.
Lawrence is the Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor chosen to run alongside gubernatorial candidate Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero in this year’s election for the state’s top post.
Lawrence grew up in Detroit and has been Southfield’s mayor since 2001. She served on the Southfield School Board from 1992 through 1996, and eventually became school board president. She is Southfield’s first black and first female mayor.
On the national stage, Lawrence was a Michigan delegate to the 2004 Democratic National Convention and a superdelegate at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. In 2008, she was invited by the U.S. House Oversight Committee to represent the nation’s mayors in testimony about the impact of the mortgage crisis on American communities. She also successfully lobbied Congress for the bridge loan for the American auto industry.
MBC-LEO is a Caucus comprised of local elected officials and municipal staff members and associates in the State of Michigan. It provides a forum for members to collaborate, network, share information and provide support to one another. The Caucus works in cooperation with the Michigan Municipal League.
