Municipal Attorneys Group Recognizes Southfield City Attorney Jack Beras
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – For lifetime commitment to Michigan communities, Jack Beras, representing the city of Southfield, was chosen to receive a 2009 Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award from the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA).
Beras was presented the Award during the October 26 Southfield city council meeting by Stephen K. Postema, MAMA president and city of Ann Arbor attorney and William Mathewson, Michigan Municipal League general counsel and MAMA secretary-treasurer.
The Award honors attorneys who, representing cities and villages, have attained the highest level of professional accomplishment while serving other municipal attorneys through professional organizations like the MAMA and the International Municipal Lawyers Association.
"Jack has successfully represented the city as counsel and co-counsel in over 100 cases," said Southfield City Administrator James Scharret. “Jack has provided sound legal advice on a daily basis to the mayor, city council and staff for more than decades while always maintaining a reputation for integrity, fairness and high ethical standards."
Among his contributions to the legal profession, Beras has served as president of the Southfield Bar Association, 12 years on the MAMA Board of Directors, two years as president; twelve years on the Michigan Municipal League Legal Defense Fund Board, two terms as chairman, and currently is a State Bar Public Corporation Law Section member.
Don M. Schmidt, principal, Miller Canfield Paddock and Stone, Kalamazoo office also received a 2009 Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award from the MAMA.
