Community Excellence Award – And the Winner Is…

The City of Grandville – Congratulations! The peer-nominated Community Excellence Award, affectionately called “The Race for the Cup,” was started by the League in 2007 to recognize innovative solutions taking place in Michigan’s cities, villages, and urban townships.

Grandville’s project was an expansion and renovation of a clean water plant, which utilizes innovative wastewater treatment technology. Click here for the press release.

Six other communities competed, with very successful projects of their own. Those are: Utica’s Riverwalk; Baroda’s Gateway to Wine Country; Durand’s Streetscape & Placemaking Campaign; Port Huron’s Parks & Rec Collaboration; Alpena’s ArtTown; and Bessemer’s Water Distribution Improvement Partnership.

Congratulations to all the communities for making “Better Communities. Better Michigan.”

MBC-LEO Fundraising Dinner

The Michigan Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials (MBC-LEO) 8th Annual Fundraising Dinner will take place in Lansing on Friday, November 9. The theme this year is One Hand Won’t Clap, But Together We Can Make Lots of Noise! This summer MBC-LEO gave $500 book scholarships to two deserving students. Those scholarships would not have been possible without the proceeds from the annual fundraising event. Join MBC-LEO on November 9 to meet the scholarship recipients, enjoy a nice meal, and to hear from Representative Fred Durhal who is also chairperson of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus.

3rd Annual Green Communities Conference

The 3rd Annual Michigan Green Communities Conference will provide local government leaders and their partners an opportunity to learn from their peers and state experts about cutting-edge home-grown sustainability practices that work in Michigan. Sessions will be structured in an interactive format that offers attendees an opportunity to learn from each other's experiences and brainstorm new solutions.

This conference is brought to you in partnership with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, Michigan Municipal League, MEDC, the Michigan Townships Association, and the Michigan Association of Counties.
