The Race for the Cup

Every year, this peer-nominated competition recognizes transformational ideas and innovative solutions created by Michigan communities. Increasingly, these local success stories are place-based projects and initiatives that are having a profound socioeconomic impact in each of the state’s seven regions.

The Community Excellence Award (CEA) is the League’s most prestigious community award. It is your opportunity to highlight local success stories and best practices, and to share innovative community programs or projects on a statewide platform. Has your community led or supported a program or project that had a significant positive impact? Could another community adapt this project to meet a similar challenge? If so, share it with your peers! Michigan communities all benefit through learning about each others’ success.

Your community could be the next winner in this spirited, peer-nominated competition!

Step 1: Attend Your Regional Roundtable!
The CEA competition occurs at the League’s Regional Roundtables, which are held at the Capital Conference in Lansing.

 Step 2: Make Your Pitch!
We’ve simplified the presentation process to keep this program accessible. All CEA presentations will be limited to an “elevator pitch” format. This means you will have five minutes to stand up and passionately present your project—no videos, no PowerPoints, just your project and power of persuasion! Each presenter will be allowed one poster display board.

Regional winners will then compete at our Annual Convention. This is the time to pull out all the stops! Each competitor will have seven minutes on the main stage, and typically prepare videos and/or PowerPoint presentations for that venue.

 Step 3: Voting
Regional Roundtable attendees vote for their favorite CEA presentation, so be sure your community turns out in force! The seven regional winners represent their communities—
and their entire region—in the final round at the League’s Annual Convention, where the winner is announced with great fanfare at the Convention’s final closing event.

Applauding innovation—it’s one more way the League is “passionately and aggressively pushing change for better communities.”

So are you ready to Race for the Cup?
