Michigan Municipal League Honors Four Long-Time Leaders, Community Advocates
The Michigan Municipal League and the state of Michigan experienced four major losses in the last week with the passing of four strong community advocates in former Harper Woods City Manager James Leidlein, Munising Mayor Pro-Tem Robert “Bob” Beauprey Jr., Milford Village Manager Arthur Shufflebarger, and former Kentwood Mayor Richard Root. These men exemplified community leadership and civic engagement and will be sorely missed. MORE>

Village Disincorporation Bill Passes Senate - Last week, Senate passed SB 1167, a bill that proscribes a procedure for disincorporation of home rule villages. Many home rule villages have disincorporation procedures in their charters, and the League wants to preserve local control. The sponsor would like a uniform process for disincorporation statewide. Federal Update
Transportation Negotiations Continue in Congress - Last week provided some hopeful signs that Congress might actually be able to scratch and claw their way to an agreement before the current extension expires at the end of the month. First there was an exchange of actual proposals between House and Senate conference leaders. It began with Senator Barbara Boxer hand delivering a compromise document to her House counterpart, Congressman John Mica and Congressman Mica returning the favor with some ideas from the House. Michigan Municipal League Forms Partnership with Saginaw Valley State University - The Michigan Municipal League has formed a new partnership with Saginaw Valley State University that will expand the educational opportunities for League members. The partnership is between the League and the University's Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development's Michigan Certified Public Manager Program. The partnership is intended to provide League members with educational access to the national Certified Public Manager program. This is a nationally accredited program offered only through Saginaw Valley State. MORE>
