Senate Committee Passes Personal Property Tax Elimination Bills on Party Line Vote
This morning (May 1, 2012), the Michigan Senate Finance committee voted 5-2, along party line votes, to pass SBs 1065-1072, the package of bills which eliminates significant portions of the personal property tax (PPT). The bills now move to the Senate floor for consideration. While we are not sure which day the Senate plans on taking these bills up, the Majority Leader has indicated he hoped it is soon. MORE>

EVIP Current Year Changes Now Law - HB 5189, which extended the deadline for the current year EVIP 3rd category and provided a second path to obtaining those funds for locals, was signed into law this morning. So, those changes are now official as Public Act 107 of 2012. June 1st is the new deadline. MORE>

Federal Update
Congressional Transportation Conference Committee Set to Meet - The House and Senate have named their conferees and the first meeting of the committee tasked with hammering out a new transportation authorization before the current extension expires will meet on May 8. The most recent extension ends June 30th. That said, Michigan is represented on the conference committee as both Congressmen Dave Camp and Fred Upton have been named as conferees. MORE>

Brookings Holds Transit Summit - The League was present when transit advocates from across Michigan met in Flint on April 19th to hear from the Brookings Institution on research performed connecting transportation to jobs. The event was hosted by the Mott Foundation. The research is included in a Brookings report titled, “Missed Opportunity: Transit and Jobs in Metropolitan America.” The report looks at the availability of transit as a means of getting residents to their jobs and studied the top 100 metros in the country, including Grand Rapids and Detroit.
