Governor Vetoes SB 77 At Request of League!

As 2010 ended, the League scored another big victory when Governor Jennifer Granholm vetoed SB 77. The bill was substituted during the final late-night session, and the final language would have specified that homes going through foreclosure and owned by banks and lending institutions could maintain the principal residence exemption (the 18 mills of local school tax). New Legislators, New Opportunities – With many new legislators starting this month, League Lansing staff is busy setting up “meet and greets” with each of them (the first of the meetings taking place tomorrow) to introduce the League and all of its services to each of them. Michigan Clout Will Be On Display In 112th Congress – As the 112th Congress gets to work, Michigan lawmakers will have considerable clout. In the Republican led House, Congressman Dave Camp (Midland) has been named chair of the important Ways and Means Committee, a spot formerly held by Michigan Congressman Sander Levin (Royal Oak). Levin will not be leaving the committee, as he will become the ranking Democratic member. MORE>

lansing old townBoyne City and Old Town Lansing Named Great American Main Street Semifinalists The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named Boyne City and Old Town Lansing as two of ten semifinalists for its "Great American Main Street Award" (GAMSA).  The top five winners will be presented at the Main Street Awards Ceremony as part of the National Main Streets Conference in Des Moines, Iowa on May 23, 2011. MORE>
