Michigan Municipal League Needs Your Help in Online Legal Notice Effort
The League's effort to save our members money by posting their legal notices online, instead of in newspapers, goes before a House committee meeting Wednesday (May 12, 2010) and we need your help!
Please contact your legislators TODAY and TOMORROW by phone or email to ask for their support for the package of bills to allow legal notices to be published online (HBs 5845, 5847, 5848, 5853, 5916 and 5917).
Here are some talking points you can use when talking to or emailing your lawmakers:
Publication of legal notices in a newspaper cost our communities millions of dollars annually. At a time when communities are struggling due to property tax revenue declining and cuts to revenue sharing, allowing legal notices to be published online will save much needed money for our communities to focus on essential services such as public safety and infrastructure.
With the decline of newspaper circulation and readership, allowing notices to be published online will increase the number of people who are able to see the notices and reach a wider audience, thus increasing government transparency.
People get their news differently than they did even a few years ago. Fewer than 3 in 10 adults read a print newspaper every day and a majority of Americans receive their news via television while a third of those ages 18-49 get most of their news online.
Allowing publication on websites and other media will increase the number of people who see notices.
The cost has resulted in local units of government having to publish in alternative publications with lower subscription and advertising rates and smaller audiences. The current publication requirement has actually limited the number of people who see these notices.
